Completed by the German composer in the year before his death, this work summarizes the variety of styles and compositional resources developed by Bach, compiling sections of music written over several years. From the fascinating initial Kyrie to the conciliatory final Dona nobis pacem, in which the chorus takes center stage, the work includes arias and duets, excerpts for vocal ensembles and a great diversity of instrumental solos, in a demonstration of mastery that places it among absolute essentials of Bach's catalogue like The Art of Fugue and The Well-Tempered Clavier.
